Moving to a mountain town is mostly the same paperwork as any move, plus a few things that only matter at 9,000 feet. This is the order to do them in.

Before you move: find somewhere to live
Housing is the hard part, so it goes first. Long-term rentals in Winter Park are scarce because most homes are second homes or nightly rentals, and the leases that do exist tend to turn over in spring and summer. How to rent long-term in Winter Park covers when to look and what landlords ask for, and what a year in Winter Park costs helps you set the budget.
Furnished matters more here than in a city. Moving a sofa over Berthoud Pass is expensive, and a furnished lease lets you try the town before you buy furniture for it. Most residences at U9200 are leased furnished, on the Corridor trail between the Winter Park and Mary Jane bases. 7 residences are available now.
The first 30 days: your driver's license
Colorado asks new residents to transfer an out-of-state driver's license within 30 days of becoming a resident (Colorado DMV). You generally count as a resident once you work in Colorado, own a business here, or have lived here for 90 days in a row (Colorado Legislature).
Book the appointment early, and check the DMV's document list before you go. You'll need proof of identity and of your new Colorado address, and a signed lease is a good start.
Within 90 days: register your car
You have 90 days from becoming a resident to register your vehicle, and it has to be done in the county where you live (Colorado Legislature). For Winter Park, that's Grand County. Its motor vehicle office is in Hot Sulphur Springs, just west of Granby. After the first registration, many renewals can be done online through myDMV or the myColorado app.
Utilities: set them up before you arrive
- Electricity: most of Grand County, Winter Park included, is served by Mountain Parks Electric, a member-owned cooperative.
- Internet: order it before you move, so it works on your first day. At U9200, residents set up their own service, and Comcast serves the building.
- Water, sewer and trash: these depend on the exact address. Ask your landlord which are included in rent before you sign.
Working remotely from Winter Park has more on internet and finding a quiet desk.
A car that's ready for winter
From September 1 to May 31, Colorado's Traction Law can require snow-rated tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread on I-70 and US-40, the two roads in and out of town. Put winter tires on before November, keep a scraper and a snow brush in the car, and learn the Berthoud Pass routine before the first storm. Driving to Winter Park in winter covers the rules, the closures and when to leave.
Schools
Winter Park is in East Grand School District. Fraser Valley Elementary is a few miles down the valley in Fraser. Granby Elementary, East Grand Middle School and Middle Park High School are in Granby, about 20 miles west. Ask the district about bus routes from your address before you sign a lease.
Healthcare
Middle Park Health runs Grand County's healthcare: a family practice and walk-in clinic in Winter Park at 47 Cooper Creek Way, and a network of locations across the county with three emergency rooms. Its Granby campus has the county's only surgical suite. For anything more specialized, Denver is about 67 miles away, over the pass.
The part no checklist covers
The first winter is the real test. Snow can last from November into May, some restaurants close in the spring and fall, and the altitude takes a few weeks to get used to. What it's like to live in Winter Park year-round is honest about who stays and who leaves after a year.
If you'd rather test it without a lifetime of furniture, start with a furnished lease on the snow.
